GO: Dear listeners, welcome back on CANALE MILVA: the web radio platform that, since the summer of 2020, has been exploring the format of the sound exhibition on the basis of some Italian music tidbits, chosen for you by Giada Olivotto and Camilla Paolino and reinterpreted by visual artists especially invited on each occasion. Today, we broadcast the fifth episode of our column “Atlantidee” from Locarno.
CP: For this fifth episode of “Atlantidee,” opened by the evergreen voice of Ornella Vanoni who, at the age of 75, revives and sings for us Antonello Venditti’s “Alta marea” (High tide), we decided to invite Concetta Spaziale—stage name of artist Radiana Basso. After training as a classical pianist, Radiana joined the garage-country-punk band called Leopardo, and then gave birth to solo projects such as Dizzy Davis and, indeed, Concetta Spaziale. In her research process, Concetta Spaziale explores and brings together a phono-spiritic aggregate of universes, which fluctuate and range across a number of genres that I am going to mention for the connoisseurs: Italian progressive rock, trance-like neo-psychedelia, no wave, new wave, ambient music, krautrock, shoegaze, and jazz. With her romantic, provocative, and esoteric lyrics, Concetta Spaziale aims at addressing and laying bare the soul, as part of her venture into the deconstruction of those emotional and psychological legacies that, for centuries, have limited the personal expression and speech-making of female musicians.
GO: For CANALE MILVA, Concetta Spaziale worked on composing a sentimental archipelago of sounds. The result of this work is titled “Prismità lunare” (Lunar Prismity) and unravels as an introspective little journey through which, thanks to experimentation, research, and composition, our mythical Concetta Spaziale traverses and narrates an attempt to emancipate herself from addiction—emotional, social, and others—by virtue of a connection with new universes, dimensions, and entities. This journey of immersion and emergence from the sea of feelings pervades, marks, and surrounds who listens, encompassing references to the everyday. The tracks that make up this collection are composed by the artist through the use of various compositional techniques, such as collage and mantric formulation in a ritualistic key, designed to produce dystopian soundscapes. The lyrics, recited or melodic, move between free poetic writing and classical songwriting. Enjoy!
