(CP): Good evening from Lake Geneva, where a chilly breeze is blowing! Welcome back to CANALE MILVA, the web radio channel that since the summer of 2020 explores the format of the sound exhibition with selected gems of Italian music chosen for you by Giada Olivotto and Camilla Paolino. Episode by episode and series after series, the songs we choose are reinterpreted by invited visual artists participating in the project. The column “Atlantidee” is slightly different from the others, as it is not specifically dedicated to a particular Italian song or singer, but rather to legends of submerged or underground worlds belonging to Mediterranean maritime culture and extending beyond that. We like to think that “Atlantidee,” and the exhibitions it contains enable us to envision fantastic worlds and equally fantastic forms of life—inhabitants of vast, deep abysses or tiny spaces of fantasy, like the famous drawer Milva sings about in “Il mare nel cassette,” (the sea in the drawer), which we heard at the beginning of this episode.
(GO): For this fourth episode of the “Atlantidee” column, we’ve invited the artist Sarina Scheidegger, who composed the sound piece titled “Shhhhip” for us. The polyphonic and collaborative nature of water has been a significant part of Sarina Scheidegger’s research for many years. Aquatic relations and cyclical instances have shaped indeed her work and thought. “Shhhhip,” which we are about to listen to together, combines and encapsulates the artist’s practice composed of sounds, texts, and chants related to fluid and transient conditions. On one hand, we can hear the whistles of the artist’s ceramic vessels—used as instruments to create the foundational layers of the sound piece—, while on the other, a hum and voice gain power and float, carrying a melody, a poem. Could it be the breeze of a song?
CP: Let’s immerse ourselves in this meditative moment that Sarina Scheidegger invites us to, through her ululations, whistles, cries, and murmurs in “Shhhhip.” Enjoy the journey!
